Skype Pros & Cons
Pros:
-
Affordability
Skype’s mobile calling plans start for as little as $2.99/month for unlimited minutes in the U.S., significantly cheaper than any phone plan. International call plans are similarly much more affordable than any offered by phone companies. -
Screen Sharing
Screen sharing and call recording are included for free. -
Split Window View
The desktop app offers a split window view so that you can access multiple conversation screens at once or remain in a video call while also accessing other files or websites on your computer. -
Group Calling
Free group calling and file sharing, perfect for long-distance business meetings.
Cons:
-
Emergency Services
Skype cannot be used to contact emergency services. -
Mac Application
Skype for Mac is not as well-regarded as the Windows app. Skype’s latest version can only be used on Mac OS X 10.10 or higher. The Mac app also uses more RAM than the Windows version and doesn’t include the same Windows integrations. -
Text Chat
Text chat is limited in terms of emoticons, integrations, bots, and other capabilities when compared with other messaging platforms such as Slack and Discord. -
Dropped Calls
Like with cell phone calls, dropped calls can occur, especially for international calls and weaker Wi-Fi signals.
