Skype Tips & Advice

Tips & Advice:

  • The popular Skype for Business app has been replaced by Microsoft Teams. Skype for Business Mac has also been replaced by Microsoft Teams for Mac. If you want to know more about this new app, check out our Microsoft Teams app review.
  • If you need to make an international call, then use Skype credit instead of wracking up a huge phone bill on your mobile or landline. For example, an international call to India costs only 1.5 cents/minute using Skype credit. Conversely, AT&T’s pay-per-use rate to India is $4/minute. If you frequently make calls to India (or any other country), you can instead choose one of Skype’s monthly subscriptions which begins with a free one-month trial.
  • Are you a small business or freelancer in need of a business phone number? Instead of paying for a new line or device, simply set up a phone number using Skype that can be accessed via desktop or mobile! Three paying options are available: $6.50/month, $18.53/3 mos., and $52.26/year.
  • Need to know how to take a screenshot on a PC or Mac during video calls? Skype’s interface remains the same for both PC and Mac, so you can follow the same instructions for either. While in call, simply click the snapshot button in the lower left of the call screen. After taking the picture, Skype will save it to your local desktop. However, this feature is not available in Skype for Web.
  • You can bookmark important messages on Skype for future reference. On any chat, click on the three vertical dots on the right side of your screen to open more options, then click “add bookmark.” To view your bookmarks, click on your profile picture, then on “bookmarks.”

Pros:

  • Skype’s mobile calling plans start for as little as $2.99/month for unlimited minutes in the U.S., significantly cheaper than any phone plan. International call plans are similarly much more affordable than any offered by phone companies.
  • Screen sharing and call recording are included for free.
  • The desktop app offers a split window view so that you can access multiple conversation screens at once or remain in a video call while also accessing other files or websites on your computer.
  • Free group calling and file sharing, perfect for long-distance business meetings.

Cons:

  • Skype cannot be used to contact emergency services.
  • Skype for Mac is not as well-regarded as the Windows app. Skype’s latest version can only be used on Mac OS X 10.10 or higher. The Mac app also uses more RAM than the Windows version and doesn’t include the same Windows integrations.
  • Text chat is limited in terms of emoticons, integrations, bots, and other capabilities when compared with other messaging platforms such as Slack and Discord.
  • Like with cell phone calls, dropped calls can occur, especially for international calls and weaker Wi-Fi signals.
